Connor statement on record SC unemployment numbers

EST COLUMBIA, SC – In response to today’s news that South Carolina’s unemployment had reached a record 12.6%, Bill Connor released the following statement:

“Obviously, this new record level of unemployment is unacceptable for our state. As this is also a national problem, much of the blame rests on overspending and overregulation by the Washington politicians, especially on the Obama Administration’s rush to spend taxpayer money on government giveaways to ‘stimulate the economy.’ Clearly, that effort is a miserable failure which has only served to mire us deeper in debt.

There is still some responsibility, however, to be laid at the feet of South Carolina’s tax structure. I call on the Legislature to get our state economy back on firmer footing by eliminating the state corporate and income tax. This will spur economic growth in every sector of our economy by leaving more money in the hands of the businessmen who in turn create most of the jobs in our state. Texas has shown the way in this regard, and their continuing robust economy in the face of a national recession is a testament that this approach can work.”
